This is the most important thing to understand about Claude Cowork pricing. In regular Chat, Claude reads your message and writes one response. In Cowork, Claude breaks your task into steps, reads and edits files, searches the web, calls connectors, and checks its own work. Each of those steps consumes tokens.
A single Cowork task might use 10 to 50 times more tokens than a Chat message, depending on complexity. That's why Pro users often hit their limits within a few tasks. It's not a bug. Multi-step, agentic work is compute-intensive by nature.
